Cruises

It would be nice...
if cruise ships came with instructions....

"Do not use longer than seven days..."
"Warning: can cause drowsiness..."
"Avoid taking in conjunction with school holidays".

Since they don't, however, we recommend that you review our information on the individual lines.  While most of the new ships share a similar look, don't think they're all the same, even if every check list of one line's amenities and special attractions matches the next one.  Cruise lines today are very brand name and image conscious.

Cruises FAQ:

What's so great about cruising?
In a word, VALUE! When pricing a cruise vacation versus a land-based holiday, consider that transportation, hotel, meals, entertainment, and most activities are included.

Isn't my time in each port limited?
Yes, but don’t forget that your time in port is just that: your time. There’s no need to spend time waiting for luggage at the airport baggage carousel, finding a taxi to your hotel, waiting in line to check-in, unpacking your bags, then go searching for a place to eat before you begin to relax. On a cruise, you arrive relaxed, step off the ship (which is almost always within walking distance of town or a short shuttle away — unlike the airport), tour the sights, and step back onboard at the end of the day.

How do I know which cruise line to choose? Are they different?
Absolutely! One of the wonderful choices about cruising is what kind of vacation you want. Some cruise lines specialize in 24-hour fun while others pamper their passengers with elegant relaxation.

Carnival
The world’s largest cruise line originated the concept of “Fun Ships.” With lavish Las Vegas style revues in multi-deck show lounges, 24-hour pizzerias, and expansive health and fitness centers to work off the calories, the ships are fantasies afloat. Even the décor is fun; each vessel features “themed” public rooms, ranging from ancient Egypt to futuristic.

Celebrity
Professional service and fine cuisine in a stylish European-flavored atmosphere are hallmarks of Celebrity Cruises. Other signature amenities include a cigar club, Martini bar, large standard staterooms with generous storage, fully equipped spas on the newest vessels, and butler service for passengers booking the top suites. Multimillion-dollar private art collections grace the entire fleet.

Crystal
Winner of accolades and awards for “World’s Best Cruise Line,” Crystal Cruises offers the grandeur of the past with all the modern touches discerning passengers demand. These elegant ships sail the world over affording their guest’s six-star service, elegant staterooms (at least half with private verandahs), a variety of dining options, and outstanding entertainment and enrichment programs.

Disney
Disney cruise combines the magic of a Walt Disney resort vacation with the romance of a sea voyage. Reminiscent of classic ocean liners, Disney vessels have two stacks and interiors that follow an Art Deco theme.  Whimsical accents cleverly incorporate the images of Mickey Mouse and his friends and opportunities are offered for junior cruisers to interact with their favorite “live” Disney characters.

Holland
Holland America Line has enjoyed a distinguished record of traditional cruises, world cruises, and transatlantic crossings for over one hundred and twenty-five years. Noted for its focus on passenger comfort, Holland America is a leader in world voyages.

Norweigian
A cruising innovator, Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) is noted for top quality, high-energy entertainment, good fitness facilities and programs, and a variety of activities. Good food and friendly service combined with value fares make NCL a winner for active cruisers and families. Newer vessels have a little something for everyone with choices of many activities and a variety of dining options.

Princess
Quietly elegant, Princess vessels set the stage for cruising in style and comfort. Passengers enjoy understated yet lovely public rooms and lounges, dramatic atriums, and fully equipped spas on the newest vessels in the fleet and multimillion-dollar art collections grace all ships. A highlight of every “Love Boat” cruise is the festive champagne waterfall. Princess Cruises offers a large number of staterooms with private balconies, yet even the least expensive inside categories have ample storage and the use of bathrobes and hairdryers.

Royal Caribbean
Over a decade ago, Royal Caribbean launched the first of the modern mega-cruise liners and continues to be an all-around favorite of passengers who enjoy traditional cruising ambiance with a touch of daring and whimsy tossed in. Plunging into the twenty-first century, Royal Caribbean has introduced such new and unheard of features as rock climbing walls, ice skating rinks, and even the first self-leveling pool tables on a cruise ship.

What about hurricanes? How can I avoid them?
You don’t have to — the cruise lines will. Ships themselves are equipped like weather stations these days and are in constant touch with storm tracking experts. Technically, however, the hurricane season runs from June 1st through November 31st though most storms occur from late August through October. Don’t avoid the Caribbean for this reason alone. First, it’s extremely unlikely a hurricane will have any serious affect on your cruise vacation. Second, September and October are generally “off season” for travel and you can get some terrific cruise savings.

How early should I book?
Book as soon as your plans allow. Cruise lines generally finalize their ship itineraries from 12 to 18 months before sailing date and the sooner you book, the more likely Cleveland Travel can confirm your first choice. A number of cruise lines offer early booking discounts to encourage early bookings. And once full payment has been received, your cruise price is guaranteed against any price increases that may occur.

Do I need special documents?
Probably. Almost every cruise involves at least one stop in a foreign country (part of the reason you’re traveling, right?). On return, you’ll need to prove your citizenship to immigration authorities. The required documentation varies with the citizenship you are holding. We recommend PassPort Express for cutting through the red tape and making obtaining a Visa or passport quick and easy.

What’s a typical day like on a cruise?
Cruise lines vary from leisurely days at sea, to busy days hustling off to visit ports of call. But basically, the day is everything you make it to be: a day of activities or a day spent asleep on a deck chair. All cruise lines publish a daily onboard list of events and activities so you can plan your day as you see fit.

Will I get seasick?
Most cruise ships avoid rough seas wherever possible. When rough seas are encountered, out go the stabilizers to help smooth the way. If you're still nervous, there are plenty of over the counter medications that will help curb seasickness.
