In 1998, Holland America celebrated its 125th anniversary as one
of the world's most renowned passenger lines. Visitors to Ellis Island in New York
will find that many of the immigrants who came to America from Europe sailed aboard its
ships, as have notables throughout the world. The line's rich history extends, too,
to Alaska, where it pioneered the cruise/tour concept more than 50 years ago.
| Throughout its long history, one word has always characterized a Holland
America cruise: excellence. The hospitality and efficiency of the line's
Indonesian and Filipino staffs, for example, are legendary in the cruise industry.
And Holland America also continues its long-standing tradition of providing the finest in
service while maintaining a "tipping not required" policy on all its ships. |

Modern Innovations
Along with its rich tradition, Holland America also offers its
guests one of the newest and most modern fleets in the world. When its new flagship,
the ms Rotterdam took its place in the fleet in December 1997,
it became the fifth new Holland America ship introduced in the past six years.
These modern ships epitomize the graceful beauty of great ocean liners, as well as the
height of contemporary technology and features. Each provides its guests an
immaculately maintained world filled with comfort and spaciousness, highlighted by
unusually large staterooms, gorgeous public areas containing some of the world's great
collections of art and antiques and large expanses of open deck, including ship-circling
promenades on every vessel.
Holland America continues to distinguish itself by offering innovative new programs for
today's vacationers. One of many examples is the line's family-oriented program of
exclusive shore excursions for children and teenagers on its Alaska sailings.
